Netflix Movies Getting Sequels in 2024 or Beyond

Pictures via Netflix

Netflix has some big sequels in store for some of its biggest movies. Below, we’ll take current stock of every Netflix Original movie (English language and international) set to get a second or third installment.

Now, we should also note that we suspect a few of these sequels will never see the light of day. In the same way that other announced Netflix movies sometimes fall away, whether due to development constraints or just quietly shelved by Netflix themselves, we often have to get to the point of production to believe that some will ever make their way onto our screens. That’s especially poignant now, given that Dan Lin is replacing Scott Stuber as the head of Netflix movies and will almost certainly have different priorities.

We’ve heard that two sequels, including the follow-up to Bright starring Will Smith and Death Note 2, have quietly been canceled behind the scenes. As a result, we’ll not include them in this list.

Two Netflix Original movie sequels are already streaming on Netflix, which were added earlier in 2024, with those being Code 8: Part II and Through My Window 3: Looking at You, released in late February 2024. Another movie that’s just around the corner on Netflix and we won’t be include in this list is Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scargiver, due out on April 19th, 2024.

English-Language Netflix Original Movies Getting Sequels

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F

One movie sequel that carries a pretty hefty asterisk is the new fourth installment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which was initially theatrically released through Paramount. Still, the latest movie, which sees Eddie Murphy returning, will be exclusive to Netflix.

Here’s what you can expect from the highly anticipated sequel that’ll star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige:

“Detective Axel Foley is back on the beat in Beverly Hills. After his daughter’s life is threatened, she and Foley team up with a new partner and old pals Billy Rosewood and John Taggart to turn up the heat and uncover a conspiracy.”

Bank of Dave: The Sequel

Coming to Netflix in 2025

Another movie that falls into a bit of an asterisk is the sequel to Bank of Dave. Netflix has only ever acquired the first movie in the United Kingdom as an original title, but it has since licensed the title in many international regions. The sequel is bound exclusively for Netflix globally.

The sequel has also added many new cast members: Amit Shah, Rob Delaney, Leila Farzad, Chrissy Metz, and Dan Fogler. They’ll be starring alongside returning stars Rory Kinnear and Jo Hartley.

Fear Street: Prom Queen

Another with an asterisk is a new follow-up horror Fear Street entry that follows the trilogy of movies released in the summer of 2021. Although it’s standalone from that trilogy, we’ll still count it as a sequel on this list.

Here’s the official synopsis for the new entry:

“Welcome back to Shadyside. In this next installment of the blood-soaked Fear Street franchise, prom season at Shadyside High is underway and the school’s wolfpack of It Girls is busy with its usual sweet and vicious campaigns for the crown. But when a gutsy outsider is unexpectedly nominated to the court, and the other girls start mysteriously disappearing, the class of ’88 is suddenly in for one hell of a prom night.”

The movie’s production is due to take place throughout the first half of 2024, with post-production set to continue through October. Could this be squeezed in for a Halloween release? We’ll have to wait and see.

Knives Out 3

Knives Out 2 (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) was the first of two sequels that Netflix ordered after the first movie’s successful run under Lionsgate. Released in late 2022, the movie was a hit for Netflix, and in 2025 (or, at worst, 2026), we should be getting the third movie.

Sadly, beyond that, Rian Johnson will direct, and Daniel Craig will star; very little is known about what’s next.

There have been conflicting reports on when this movie will begin filming so far. Some say it will start sometime this Summer (we heard June), while others suggest it will be much later in the year. Either way, we look forward to Daniel Craig’s next outing as Benoit Blanc.

Red Notice 2 and 3

A lot of people dump on Red Notice, but to this day, it continues to be Netflix’s most successful and most-watched movie of all time. Carried by its three main stars, Ryan Reynolds, Gal Gadot, and Dwayne Johnson, the movies were initially reportedly set to be filmed back to back in 2023, but that never got underway.

Will these pair of sequels ever see the light of day? We’ll have to wait and see.

The Gray Man 2

Following the release of the first The Gray Man movie in 2022, which was headlined by Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, Netflix quickly announced that it would be developing a sequel, with Joe and Anthony Russo set to return to direct, plus a spin-off.

The last we heard about this movie was that it had been quietly put on the back burner, with the Russos focusing on other projects. We’ll see if it ever comes to fruition.

The Old Guard 2

One movie in the can, so to speak, is the long-awaited Charlize Theron The Old Guard sequel that wrapped up filming in September 2022. That said, we have no idea when we’ll see the sequel come to Netflix. It notably missed its 2023 release and wasn’t included in the 2024 movie roster announcement in February, either.

Victoria Mahoney took over directing duties for the sequel, which added Henry Golding and Uma Thurman to the cast.

The Sea Beast 2

One of two animated movies set for sequels at Netflix includes The Sea Beast, the beautifully animated movie by director Chris Williams. First announced to be getting a sequel in January 2023, Williams will return to direct the sequel and is also working on a brand new project for Netflix too.

Leo is the other Netflix Original animated movie that is reportedly getting a sequel, but Netflix has not officially confirmed this.

Frank Lammers returns as Ferry Bouman in the sequel, which sees the drug lord retire following the first movie’s events. Well, for a short while at least!

Troll 2

If you make a hit for Netflix, you’ll likely get a sequel. That’s evident with Troll from Roar Uthaug becoming Netflix’s biggest international movie of all time, still holding its own against the recent entry Society of the Snow.

A sequel was ordered in late 2023, with plans for production to begin at some point in 2024.

In the interest of keeping this article concise, here are a few more titles that have been either confirmed for sequels, rumored, or at one point were due to get sequels:

  • The Polish movie Furioza, released in 2022, is due to get two additional entries as announced in December 2022.
  • Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead was supposed to get a sequel, but I’m not sure if this will ever see the light of day!
  • Chris Hemsworth teased an Extraction 3 at Netflix’s TUDUM event in Brazil in 2024.
  • Spenser Confidential from Film 44 and Peter Berg was once getting a sequel at Netflix—it’s unclear whether that’s still happening.
  • We Can Be Heroes by director Robert Rodriguez was expected to get a sequel on Netflix, but nothing has been said about it since 2020.
  • Yes Day, starring Jennifer Garner, was announced to get a sequel in 2021 that would see the star return as Allison Torres. Nothing has been said about this for quite some time.
