“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is an upcoming American science fiction action film directed by Wes Ball, featuring a screenplay by Josh Friedman, Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, and Patrick Aison. The film is produced by Joe Hartwick Jr., Jaffa, Silver, and Jason Reed. Serving as a sequel to “War for the Planet of the Apes” (2017), it represents the fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes reboot franchise.
The lead role is portrayed by Owen Teague, supported by Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, and William H. Macy. The development of a new Planet of the Apes film commenced in April 2019 after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox, with Wes Ball attached as the writer and director in December of the same year.
Much of the script was crafted during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and casting began in June 2022, following the completion of the script. Owen Teague was cast in the lead role in August, with the film’s title and additional casting unveiled in subsequent months. Principal photography took place from October 2022 to February 2023 in Sydney. Scheduled for release by 20th Century Studios in the United States on May 24, 2024, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” will have an exclusive theatrical release.
However, when it eventually goes to streaming, it is anticipated to land on Disney+ or Hulu, given that the film is distributed by the Disney-owned 20th Century Studios. With Disney acquiring Comcast’s remaining stake in Hulu, it’s likely that Disney+ and Hulu will merge into a unified streaming app by the time the film becomes available for streaming.
The first teaser trailer, released on November 2, 2023, offers a glimpse of the film’s new plot and introduces a younger ape, presumably the lead character. Notably, the apes will no longer speak in broken English but will be fluent in the English language.
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” serves as a soft reboot of the franchise, set years after the events of the “Caesar Trilogy.” While those films remain canon, characters like Caesar, Koba, Cornelia, Maurice, Rocket, and Nova are not expected to appear in this new installment. According to Wes Ball, Caesar remains a spiritual presence in the film, but most of his living relatives will not be featured.
The human lead, Mae, will be played by Freya Allan, who joins the young ape on his journey. Previous human cast members from the Caesar trilogy, including James Franco, Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Woody Harrelson, and Amiah Miller, are not expected to return, with Freya Allan assuming the lead role.
The ensemble cast also includes William H. Macy, Eka Darville, Travis Jeffery, Neil Sandilands, Sara Wiseman, Lydia Peckham, Ras-Samuel Weld A’abzgi, and Dichen Lachman. While details and names for the new characters remain undisclosed, the film promises an intriguing expansion of the Planet of the Apes universe.
